Estimating Populations Matching Activity

A matching activity to practice estimating how many times larger and smaller very large numbers are. There is a reference sheet of countries and the world populations. Those will be used to find out how many times larger or smaller two countries are between one another. There are two sets of cards (20 problems) of matched correctly cards and a set of incorrectly matched that are ready to print and for students to cut and begin matching. An answer key is provided with areas for work space as well. This activity can be used individually, in small groups, cards set up in stations or a whole class activity! The possibilities are endless!!

Operations with Scientific Notation Hole Punch Game

Everyone loves to play a game, right? This is a perfect, easy set up game - all you need is a hole punch! Have students work alone (preferably), pairs or more and complete the 10 problems. When they complete the problems, they have two chances to get the answer correct. Depending on how many chances the student took will determine how many hole punches they get. This game is for scientific notation problems of all operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying & dividing). There are a great variety of problems and they are not too difficult, it gives them practice. A great tool to use as a quick assessment too!

Adding and Subtracting Scientific Notation Scavenger Hunt

Multiplying Scientific Notation Partner Activity

A great tool for students to work together and make sure they are understanding how to multiply scientific notation problems. This activity has two suggested option directions. (1) Partner students up and then each student gets a set of 10 problems. They each work through problems alone and then at the end either check answers or switch sets and work through the other set of 10 problems (collecting answer keys or hiding them until they have the second set complete). Each partners problems will match with the SAME answer (#1 and #11 will be matching, #2 and #12 and so on ...) There are blank recording answer sheets available as well to track answers. (2) Or have students work through all 20 problems individually; working through one set a time while collecting answer before the second set is handed out. These problems work with moving the decimal point to the left and right along with positive and negative exponents as well! A great variety of problems to practice multiplying scientific notation problems!

Multiplying and Dividing Scientific Notation Problem Color By Number Activity

Need practice for multiplying and dividing scientific notation problems? This activity can be broken up in two ways; students can answer the problems only or students can answer the problems and complete the coloring page. Color by number activities can keep students learning, but in a quieter environment while working through the problems.

Subtracting Scientific Notation Riddle Activity

Solve scientific notation problems by multiplying and adding a fun riddle with it! This activity can be used by completing the 12 riddle problems. The activity could also be used as a student self-check, if students do not complete answers correctly they will not solve the riddle correctly. The answers will be in positive and negative form. These are great introduction problems, it works on students moving the decimal to the right or left to have the same exponent, then they can solve the problem.

Solve scientific notation problems by dividing! The activity could also be used as a student self-check or with partners, stations and more! If students do not complete answers correctly they will not link the chain correctly. These are great introduction problems; a great mix dividing scientific notation problems. Add to your classroom student work and connect all student chain together and display their work!
