Ever have students question the scientific notation operation rules?

Allowing students to convert to standard form before solving addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division problems allows them to see their answers in everyday form. Then requiring them to test the scientific notation operation rules to see if their answers match. Finally coaching the use of a scientific calculator to find any errors in calculations. Using these three methods often helps students realize that using the rules is less time consuming than converting to standard form.

Students to solve problems using multiple methods to gain confidence that the scientific operation rules work.
