Students will estimate very large or very small numbers (expressed in scientific notation) by placing them on a number line in the classroom. Rope and clothespins are used to hold the numbers that are copied on cardstock and laminated or written on index cards. This task can be used as a Warm Up as students enter the room, during instruction to informally assess understanding, or at the end of class to review and conclude the lesson. Leave the number line up for a week or so as a visual reminder.
