Description

In this activity, students will use their knowledge of exponent rules to multiply and divide numbers written in scientific notation. There are six problems total - three require the multiplication of numbers in scientific notation and three require division of numbers in scientific notation. Additionally, two of the six questions are word problems.

Students will work a single problem in groups of three, by rotating the paper among members of the group. Teams complete the problems by having each member complete ONLY ONE of the following steps:

1. Multiply or divide the decimal numbers.
2. Use the laws of exponents to determine the power of 10.
3. Write the final answer in scientific notation.

Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions. For example, 3² × (3⁻⁵) = (3⁻³) = 1/3³ = 1/27.
