This is a project that can be completed in a math or science class. The purpose of this project is to get students thinking how writing in scientific notation can be used outside of the classroom.
Students are to think of six different locations, and find the distance between them. For example, the distance between the North Pole and South Pole. The students would have to find the distance and then create a word problem. I had my student keep the unit of measure the same with all of the distances. If they chose to find the distance between their house and the neighbor's house, the unit of distance had to be the same for the distance between the North Pole and the South Pole.
My students loved this project. They were all creative with when writing the word problems.
