Need a science back-to-school activity that helps students reflect on their summer while getting their minds refocused on science skills? Or do you need an end-of-year activity that encourages students to reflect on the year's science skills as they make summer plans? My students love this literacy-focused written product at the beginning of the year, as they transition back to school, and having them present their products makes for a great icebreaker! Every year I am impressed with how the students give thoughtful attention to their summer activities and how they connect to science. Their writing helps me get to know them and easily assess their science and literacy skills. The activity is personalized for each student, which opens the door for all kinds of possibilities and easy differentiation.
This six-page product, which includes "I Can" goals and an aligned analytical rubric, is most appropriate for Grades 5-7, as at those grades students are still working on science skills while developing written product sophistication. However, teachers at any of the middle and upper grades can apply this product to their specific subject areas. The product includes an instruction page and rubric page for students/parents, as well as additional teacher support documents that outline specific differentiation strategies and specific Common Core Technical Subjects literacy standards alignment. The product is offered in Rich Text Format, which means it is compatible with all word-processing programs and is fully editable by the teacher so that you can add or remove whatever you like! Enjoy!
