I use these with my students at the beginning of the year to help them set up lab partners for the rest of the year. I have the students find a classmate with an open scientist buddy, and then they write each others' names next to that scientist's name. On lab days, I might say "Today we are working with our Einstein buddies. Everyone find your Einstein buddy and find a seat in the lab." The idea is similar to "Clock Buddies" that some teachers use for math.
Here is a good description of Clock Buddies: http://www.readingquest.org/strat/clock_buddies.html
