Scissor Skills. Scissoring is an important skill! In order to use scissors correctly, children need sufficient finger and hand strength and stability, sufficient development of the hand arches, hand–eye coordination, and bilateral integration skills (using both hands together). All of these same skills also contribute to the development of handwriting, so they are of particular importance during Preschool and Kindergarten. And scissoring letters and numbers help your students internalize letter and number shapes! This will help them avoid common handwriting problems such as reversing letters and numbers, discriminating between similarly-shaped letters and numbers, and mastering difficult-to-form letters and numbers. This is a great handwriting preparation and remediation activity!
Help your students develop good scissoring skills by cutting out animals, letters, and numbers. Remember, keep your thumb up while scissoring!
