Description

Beginning scissors skills for preschool and kindergarten are paired with simple science concepts in Book 3 of this program, ALL ABOUT TREES, created by an occupational therapist. This resource includes 8 developmentally graded cutting activities. This book is the third of ten books in the growing Scissor Skills & Science Series.

ALL ABOUT TREES helps kids master the third scissors skill: Snipping. Children snip strips of construction paper. This addresses the movements a child uses to cut as well as hand strength. Also, it reinforces bilateral skills as both hands work together to complete the task.

This book is ideal for 3 to 4 year-olds, but suits all children working on initial scissors skills. The science teaches children all about trees: What are the parts of trees and their functions; children also learn what happens to trees throughout the seasons.

This book has been designed to use over the course of one to two weeks. It is recommended children complete activities in the order they are presented.

In each of these 8 "Snipping" activities children follow 3 steps:

1- Adults cut construction paper into long strips about an inch wide

2- Children cut construction paper strips into small pieces

3- Kid glue the small pieces of construction paper onto each activity's Gluing Page

The 8 "Snipping" activities include:

1- Leaves on a Tree

2- The Trunk of a Tree

3- Roots of a Tree

4- Trees in the Fall

5- Trees in the Spring

6- Trees Need Sunshine

7- Trees Need Rain

8- Trees Need Nutrents

Why pair scissors skills with Science?

1- MOTIVATION: Many young children are eager to learn about science. Including science concepts in this resource raises a child’s motivation for cutting activities.

2- COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT: Science topics stimulate a child’s looking, listening, thinking, and reasoning skills. Teachers and parents can incorporate these science lessons into everyday life.

3- REINFORCE ACADEMICS: Incorporating an appropriate science curriculum introduces science into childrens’ worlds, as well as language and math concepts.

Also included in this resource is a poster called The 3 T's: Rules for Using Scissors:

Using pictures, this poster reminds a child to tuck his elbow to his side, keep his thumb up, and cut toward the table.

* TUCK! . . . TUCK your elbow by your side

* TOP! . . . Keep your thumb on TOP

* TABLE! . . . Cut TOWARD the table and away from you
