Here is a motivating and hands-on activity that students will want to play at any time of the year. This activity allows students to practice adding within 100, adding a two-digit number with a multiple of ten, and using the commutative and associative properties of addition. This aligns with Common Core State Standards 1.OA.8, 1.NBT.5, and 1.NBT.4.
In this activity students have to select an ice cream cone and use 2 to 3 scoops of ice cream (which are labeled with multiples of ten) to create the sum on the cone. Students can make the sum using a variety of combinations.
Want to differentiate this activity? Challenge students to come up with as many combinations as possible for each sum. Students who need more support can complete this activity with a hundreds chart.
