How many different two scoops options could you order when there are two flavors? How about when the number of flavors double? What if you aren't sure how many flavors, could you still figure it out?
Students look at combination options, building on their number sense and concepts around an unknown (n number of scoops).
There are 2 pdf files with the same questions on both, one is simply created as one page (great for those who will ask their students to make a paper about their work on a larger separate piece of paper) and the other is stretched out onto two pages, providing more work space.
Possibilities for the activities include:
- partner/group work
- creating a chart of the class's findings for the extension
- discussion around ways students/partners/groups chose to organize their work
