Scoot! A fast-paced, fun way to practice, review or assess!
Setup: Arrange desks and/or tables in whatever manner you desire. Many teachers will place them in a large, rectangular perimeter, with space between each desk. If you prefer, you can leave your current classroom setup, but just make sure your students know which way to move!
Directions: Set a “scoot” card on each desk. Students will start at their own desks. They will read the sentence, determine whether the figurative language used is simile, metaphor, personification or hyperbole, and write the answer on the correct line of the answer sheet. After 30 seconds (or however long your class needs), teacher says “scoot!” and children rotate in one direction and work on the next sentence, recording their answer. Repeat! Scoot is over when students have returned to their own desks.
These could also be used as task cards in a center or placed around the room, taped in various “hiding places” for students to find and write the answer.
