This Scramble for Africa activity is best conducted as a review during a unit on Imperialism, specifically after discussing the European colonization of Africa in World History. There are 8 tasks for students to complete, either individually, in pairs, or in a small group. All expectations and instructions are clearly stated in the handout.
The first task is a timeline with 3 or 4 (depending on your choice) items for the students to include. Tasks 2-8 involve analyzing images, discussing the Berlin Conference, identifying the motives for colonization, the gains of colonization, attempts at resistance, the lives of those being colonized, and the role of European rivalries.
A points distribution and partial answer key is included. It is a partial answer key because many of the answers will depend on the countries the students choose to work with and which countries you cover in class.
