This is a packet - or a scrapbook - that I hand out to my students at the beginning of the year. We spend one class period talking about the scrapbook, adding ideas to it, etc. Then they keep it in their Writer's Workshop folder and add to it as the year goes on. They constantly have ideas to write about and they can add to it at any time so they don't forget writing ideas.
Included in this scrapbook are places to put memories, photos, things that happened in school, story starters, etc.
There are 10 templates for pages. I usually have them bind and put together at the beginning of the year and then we add to it a little at a time. The templates are as follows:
Page 1 - Cover
Page 2 - Possible Writing Ideas
Page 3 - Attach a picture and write a prompt
Page 4 - Brainstorming page
Page 5 - This is My Life page
Page 6 - Generic prompts leading to a specific prompt
Page 7 - School Days
Page 8 - Scary Story Starters - Blank
Page 9 - Writing Ideas - Blank
Page 10 - Things I have written about - record keeping
You can staple the pages together or be more creative in your binding method. You could laminate the cover to make it appear as more of a scrapbook which would also help it endure wear and tear. You could add in your own pages or add multiple copies of the same pages for extra writing space. The possibilities are endless!
