I remember the first "Bible comic" I drew. I was in the sixth grade at Vacation Bible School . . . and I was not into it. I was in that "I'm getting too old for this" mood that morning. I was also the only boy in my VBS class. And then our teacher almost off-handedly suggested an activity taken straight from the VBS curriculum: drawing a comic strip version of the Bible story we were learning about. Suddenly, I was engaged. In fact, I've made something of a career out of that very idea; visualizing the Bible through comics. But the first twelve years of attempts were somewhat mixed. This is the first curriculum I've written that uses comics in a way that I believe actually "works." All my lesson plans get tested through my church where I serve as a children's pastor. When I asked my own 10-year-old daughter what she remembered from Psalm 23 after our first lesson, I was actually surprised. She quoted back to me the entire Psalm! She had learned ABOUT the Psalm before, but she didn't KNOW it. But I hope that these comics won't merely get the words of a Psalm into our kids' short-term memories. My hope is that the deeper significance of those words will get in their hearts! That's what the God & You sections are intended to do. God bless your work with children. I hope these lessons will help your kids draw close to God.
