This is a really fun clay project for high school students because they can be SO CREATIVE with such a simple idea of BIRDS. They go in totally different directions with it, and it's cool to see. They always love this sculpture unit.
This project handout goes through:
-Definitions of SCORE and SLIP which is key for clay, along with ADDITIVE and SUBTRACTIVE and LEATHER HARD
-A step-by-step guide of the entire creation, from sketchbook work, to creating the main body, to designing (uses two pinch pots, you can also teach this with the coil pot method too!)
-A rubric to make marking easy for you
These make for such an awesome school display and students never let me keep them as demo's which is a great sign!
-you can use both air dry clay OR clay that needs to be fired if you have a kiln
-if using air dry, by painting them afterwards with acrylic and spraying them with spray gloss, you can create a wicked "faux glaze" look for cheap
-You could also have students work with a main theme, such as "comedic" or "horrific" and let that drive their entire design
-You can let students design a "base" for the bird to sit on if they wish
-REMINDER IF FIRING - ensure the birds are hollow and have a hole in the bottom!
