This is an excellent back-to-school science activity for elementary, middle school, and secondary students. This interesting science experiment is hands on and has a visual hook as the crystals are very attractive.
Beautiful colored crystals made of calcium from sea shells can form on sea shells themselves! These crystals are easy to make and are a perfect activity when studying the ocean, mollusks, and the role of calcium in ocean biology and chemistry. Directions to make the crystals are provided and different methods of crystallization are described. The science behind the crystallization is explained and the chemical formulas for the reaction are provided.
Students love sea shell crystals!
The activity can be run in conjunction with the Sea Shells in Vinegar Activity
, as this produces the vinegar-calcium solution that is used to make the crystals. Click on the link below to view this resource where students measure the mass of the dissolving sea shell!
