Nice extension activity when studying seafloor spreading and continental drift in a plate tectonics unit!
Supports Standards: NGSS MS-ESS2-1 and MS-ESS2-2
Students are first given a very quick introduction about how scientists use sonar to measure the depth of the ocean. They are then given data about longitude and depth, and must plot the information on a provided graph. (To make it easier, the graph already has the axis labeled.) The graph creates a "side profile" of the Atlantic ocean floor. After the graph is complete, students "work up" the graph by coloring the Earth and the ocean, and labeling the Mid-Atlantic ridge and other features. There are also 8 worksheet questions that review seafloor spreading and continental drift.
