This free Search and Rescue kit provides a sample of 10 addition and subtraction word problems. The word problems all require either addition or subtraction, and some require more than one step. This kit includes a set of the cards in black and white, directions for printing, answers, a student recording sheet, and further instruction on how to play.
How to Play:
The cards are ready to print. Print the cards front/back. Once they are printed, fold your page so that a number is displayed on the outside, and a word problem is on the inside.
Disperse the cards around the classroom so that students can easily “Search” for their answers.
Assign students to begin at different cards/locations. Students should carry their math journal with them to record the steps they take to solve each question.
Students will begin by opening their first card, reading, and solving it. They will then look throughout the room to find the answer to their card. They will walk to the card with their answer and continue this process until they have solved all Search and Rescue cards.
If a student, or pair of students, becomes stuck at any time, they should meet you at the “Rescue” table for assistance.
