This is one of my favorite units to teach! Within the medium of seashells, students analyze a poem for figurative language, practice using figurative language -- specifically similes, metaphors, and sensory details (those that pertain to all 5 senses) and include the descriptive, figurative language in their own original poetry.
Included in this unit is the poem Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh, which is the basis for the unit, teacher modeling activities, poetry analysis activities, prewriting activities for students’ own poetry, figurative language activities, a poetic form for students to use to begin writing their first drafts of the poem, a sample seashell poem, revising and editing ideas, publishing ideas, and a complete unit lesson plan. This unit usually takes about a week, and it can be adapted to be shorter or longer, according to student need.
