I use this project to help students understand the seasons. They pick two locations to place hotels in order to understand how to get two of one season and what really creates the seasons. I complete this project after they complete the daylight graph (already posted for free!) and after they have taken notes on the seasons. Students are excited to select their own locations and to be able to pick anywhere around the world.
I walk them through the project one step at a time. The temperature graph is homework after they have been introduced to the project and allowed to pick their locations in class (can be completed at home if they have access to a computer). I then have them write each paragraph for HW and have peer editing in class to make it better. After all paragraphs are edited and ready, students can create a brochure and add pictures, rate charts, Hotel names in order to make it attractive. I provide an example in class of what it should look like. My example is a trifold brochure, however, as long as the paragraphs are put into the brochure in the order they would be read, it should be fine. I am happy to email you a pdf of my sample if you have purchased and want to see a sample.
Paragraph #1 asks students to sell the season. We do this in class and talk about how to persuade the reader with descriptive language and examples to sell the season. For this paragraph, they also have to realize that they will not come from one hotel to another, but have to have specific dates to arrive and leave each hotel.
Paragraph #2 requires students to complete graph interpretation for the daylight and temperature at the locations. In addition, they also have to describe the season and locations.
The last paragraph is the most important because students have to explain the seasons and use the terms correctly. I find it so helpful to their understanding to have to create this paragraph.
