This weekly lesson plan goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: Seasons. This is an author study on Cynthia Rylant. It is the FIRST week in my Season Unit.

In this weekly lesson plan, students will be listening to stories written by Cynthia Rylant. They will be responding to the text in their student response books. Since this lesson was designed with the beginning second graders in mind, the lesson plan includes a lot of modeling as well as whole class instruction.

By the end of the week, they are able to:
identify the narrative elements in a text written by Cynthia Rylant.
compare and contrast a character’s life with their own.
write a paragraph about a personal experience.
write a descriptive sentence about fall.
answer questions about Cynthia Rylant’s life.
locate information using text features.


Books you will need are:
When I Was Young In The Mountains by Cynthia Rylant
In November by Cynthia Rylant
You will only need one copy of each book.

The Common Core Standards addressed are:
RL.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

RL.2.4: Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, [and] repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.

RI.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

RI.2.5 Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

SL.2.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.

SL.2.2: Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.
