**Update - I have included the original WORD version of the response booklet so you can make changes if needed.
This weekly lesson plan goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: A Season for Chapters Unit. It is the FOURTH week in my Season Unit.
In this weekly lesson plan, students will be using the close reading strategy to read 4 poems. All of the poems are provided in their student response booklet. They all fall under Public Domain and are listed on the Common Core exemplar list for 2nd grade.
Students will be analyzing each poem for meaning, sound, structure and feeling. They will learn to annotate over the poem. In addition, students will be using the poem to answer text based questions as well as higher level thinking questions. I have built a lot of scaffolding into this weekly lesson since it was designed to be taught at the beginning of second grade.
By the end of the week, they are able to:
answer questions related to the meaning of a poem.
explain the text structure and sound within a poem.
express feelings when reading a poem.
Poems included are:
Bed in Summer by Robert Louis Stevenson
The wind by Christina Rossetti
Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Evening by Robert Lee Frost
Weather by Eve Merriam
The lesson plan contains the following:
+Common Core Standards
+I can statements
+Detailed plans for the week (7 pages)
+1 student response booklet template to copy for each student - the booklet is formatted to be printed front and back so that when you fold it all the pages line up. You don't have to print it as a book. You could copy it and cut the pages so that the students can paste them into their reading journals.
+1 poetry test
The Common Core Standards addressed are:
RL.2.1: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

RL.2.10: By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2–3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
