This weekly lesson plan goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: A Season for Chapters Unit. It is the THIRD week in my Season Unit.

In this weekly lesson plan, students will be learning about the secret life of trees and how leaves are important to the life of a tree. They will be learning key vocabulary words and identifying text features using an informational text. They will be collecting leaves around their house and school. The students will use the leaves to complete a leaf rubbing activity, create an informational poster and write a 3-4 sentence paragraph. They will also identify two of the leaves they collected by using tree leaf identification guides. At the end of the week, the students will learn how to take an acorn from a white oak tree and plant it correctly in a pot.

By the end of the week, they are able to:
use the glossary to find the meaning of words.
ask and answer questions about an informational text.
identify text features in an informational text.
use resources to identify different types of tree leaves.
measure the length and width of tree leaves.
create a poster to share my findings.
write a descriptive paragraph about a tree leaf.
plant a white oak acorn correctly and explain how it germinates.

+1 student response booklet template to copy for each student - the booklet is formatted to be printed front and back so that when you fold it all the pages line up. You don't have to print it as a book. You could copy it and cut the pages so that the students can paste them into their reading journals.

The Common Core Standards addressed are:
RI.2.1: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

RI.2.4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area.

RI.2.5: Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

W.2.8: Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

SL.2.2: Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.

SL.2.6: Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification. (See grade 2 Language standards 1 and 3 here for specific expectations.)
