Are you looking for a comprehensive, engaging, and thought-provoking activity on southern secession, the birth of the Confederacy, and the start of the Civil War? Do you want to make your class completely PAPERLESS? If so, this activity is the one you want!
This "Secession!" Digital Activity includes:
1) A comprehensive study of the causes of secession, the formation of the Confederacy, and the events leading up to the attack on Fort Sumter and the start of the war between the states. Students will begin by examining the Election of 1860, including the candidates of each major party, their stance on slavery, and the regions of the country that rallied to support them. Then, your class will review why the South opposed Abraham Lincoln so strongly and look into how Lincoln won a divided election. Your students will then use a timeline of events between 1860 and 1861 to answer questions about the secession of several Southern states and the eventual birth of the Confederate States of America. Your students will analyze why South Carolina felt compelled to secede and how the principle of states rights led others to follow in its footsteps and leave the Union. Next, your students will use a primary source to evaluate the intentions and goals of Abraham Lincoln upon taking office in 1861. Students will read an excerpt from Lincoln's first inaugural address and use the document to answer questions about Lincoln's intentions toward the seceded states and his vision moving forward as president. Then, your class will use a primary source to evaluate the intentions and goals of Jefferson Davis as President of the Confederacy. Students will read an excerpt from Davis's inaugural address and use the document to answer questions about Davis's attitude toward secession, states rights, and his resolve to fight an armed conflict against the North if necessary. Lastly, your students will answer questions about the attack of Fort Sumter and the start of the Civil War. Students will also use a key and a map of the United States provided to identify states faithful to the Union, slave states that remained in the Union, states that seceded the Union and formed the Confederacy prior to the attack on Fort Sumter, as well as states that seceded and joined the Confederacy after the attack.
The great thing about this activity is that it gives you many different ways to use it. You can have the students work individually on the activity or they can discuss in pairs. You can set it up as a class discussion or debate or have students walk around the room discussing the subject matter. The options for this activity are endless.
