At some point I had (I believe) a junior-year Holt literature book that had an excerpt from a novel entitled Second Daughter. I believe the writer was Mildred Pitts Walter. I've no clue as to which section of the book these words are from.
Two Pages: Answer Key + Word Search...
RATIONAL / Able to think or reason
SQUARED / Changed from a slumped position to a straightened one
BARED / Uncovered; showed
TITLE / Document that proves that something is lawful
FOLLY / Lack of good sense or judgment
CLAMMY / Cold and damp
VALID / Acceptable by law
PITY / Feeling of sorrow for someone else’s suffering
I have at least four products available for this literature that rely on the same combination of words and definitions:
1) A word search using just the words themselves as clues. Note that the definitions won’t be found anywhere on this product, itself.
2) A crossword puzzle with definitions as clues + a word bank.
3) A second (and different) word search using the words' definitions as clues from which students can locate the corresponding words.
4) A second (and different) crossword puzzle with definitions, but no word bank.
Check the product title and thumbnails to make sure you're purchasing the one you want, but please consider the following: Perhaps the best way to inculcate the words is with all four! Start with #1, the regular word search, and, over some days, move through them consecutively until, perhaps, you use #4, the crossword with no word bank, as a summative assessment measuring both spelling and association?
