Comparing unit measurements is the foundation for fractions.
✔ First, your students measure each of the school supply cards with small paperclips and record their findings on an answer sheet.
✔Next, students will measure the same items using the large paperclips noting their results.
✔Finally, the class will discuss patterns in the chart using the provided discussion cards.
Third grade teachers and above may extend by doing a deeper study of one school supplies. What fraction of the whole is each smaller paperclip? What fraction of the whole is each large paperclip? How do the denominators relate to the patterns the class found in the measurement results? Happy Measuring!
