As the "math guru" at my school, occasionally I will have teachers ask me what makes a strong math program. Like anything else in education, there is not just one answer. I incorporate a combination of math components into my math program. One component being Exemplars. Exemplars is the writing component I use for my students and I tailor the Exemplars math to what I am teaching at the time. I structure the Exemplars to include a place for students to show their work, explain what they did, and what is a math connection they made. I have also included a scoring rubric I use from http://www.exemplars.com/resources/rubrics/student-rubrics The scoring rubric is located on each Exemplar activity I have created. This allows the student to see where they are as a math student as I conference with them.
For each activity, I have also included a student check list to help students stay on track.
