This set of word wall words is based on the second 100 words found on the Fry List of the 1000 most commonly used words. The words are differentiated by color:
Red means STOP because this is a true sight word that breaks all spelling rules and must be recognized upon sight.
Yellow means Slow Down and Think about the phonetic patterns / letter combinations we have learned in class.
Green means GO! Go ahead and sound this word out. (CVCe words were included as green cards in this set as this is a pattern taught in first grade.)
Providing students with these visual cues will help them to know how to approach an unknown word, leading to faster and greater automaticity of the first 100 Fry words.
These word cards can be used for a traditional word wall and/or as a hands-on interactive word wall. A poster with Red, Yellow, Green stoplight directions is included.
