This second grade unit includes economics and geography expectations for second graders to know.
The following concepts are covered:
Maps and parts of maps (legends, symbols, compass rose)
Sizes of states, cities, and towns in terms of population and size
Changes in places over time
Why people live where they live
Compare/Contrast communities from past to present
Resources- Renewable and Nonrenewable
Geography is taught through direct discussion as well as a 5 day simulation. Economics is mainly taught through the simulation. There are different communities in which students make up and they create different resources, except what will happen when some resources dry up?
This unit is a perfect way to teach geography and economics in a fun way. This will stick with your students forever! Simulations are the best way to reach your students and have them enjoy school!
I have compiled lesson plans for each lesson so you know exactly what you are doing. There is also very little preparation for you throughout this whole unit. There are 5 lessons as well as 5 days of the simulation. This should take you between 2-4 weeks depending on how much time you give to social studies.
