Students track their individual reading progress based on the theme of perseverance from The Tortoise and the Hare fable adapted by Janet Stevens. The data wall is a charming 8x10 original depiction of Tortoise's race. Whenever the student moves up another guided reading level, they fill in a portion of the track. Students can store their track in their literacy folder, and are motivated to see their efforts recorded in a concrete form throughout the year. Parents can see their child's progress at parent conferences.
Reading Award This is presented when a student moves up the next level, and he/she can bring home this original artwork to display at home for a data wall. The refrain, slow and steady wins the race. Don't give up, just keep your pace is the message on the card, along with Tortoise progressing to the next flag, or reading level. These 5x7 cards can be duplicated on various color paper or card stock. In the beginning of the year, run off your entire supply, so management is a snap!
