If you are a Pure Literacy follower, you know I am a writing coach and a big fan of Lucy Calkins. I believe the kind of paper you provide students directly influences the writing they do. This information writing paper packet was designed to be used to support instruction in writing when using the Lucy Calkins Second Grade Information Writing Curriculum in the science content area. It includes a combination of paper to support writing both lab reports and All-About Books. Both of these fall within information/explanatory writing Common Core Standard Writing Standard 2.
Teachers will love the differentiation possibilities to support all your writers during writing workshop. Kids will love the variety of paper choices. Scaffolds of support that will help even your most reluctant writers are provided by the graphic organizers included in each text type packet. As a literacy coach, instructional coach and district staff developer, this product includes many of the writing paper resources I use on the job with teachers and students in classrooms every day.
Included in this information/explanatory writing packet are:
• Differentiated paper choices for both lab reports and “all-about” a science topic books
• Graphic organizers aligned to information writing text type
• Variety of student writing booklet covers
• Variety of student writing booklet inserts
• Information writing goal setting suggestions
• Information writing student reflection sheet
• Sentence frames supporting the scientific method
For primary K-2 teachers who are NOT using the Lucy Calkins Writing Units of Study Curriculum and are looking for paper to support writing in the Science Content area, please check out my other product- Write Like a Scientist science notebook. While these two products are very similar in content, they are not meant to be used together. This second-grade information paper pack resource is meant to be used when teaching information writing using the Lucy Calkins Units of Study, and the other one was adjusted slightly for teachers who are not using the Lucy Calkins Units of Study Curriculum to teach information writing in science content areas in their primary K-2 classrooms.
