Students are given a pretest on Monday using the List B words. The teacher determines if they continue to study List B for the week, or given List A or C. Students could be given List A if they perform poorly on List B. List A words are half Dolch sight words and half simple words using the phonics skill for the week. Students doing well on List B have no reason to continue study List B and are moved to List C. List C is comprised of harder words still following the skill for the week and most of the words are coming out of the anchor story or the blend practices from the daily phonics lessons. All students are tested on Friday. To not cut too much into your reading block, the teacher can pull each grade to administer the tests as part of a centers rotation. Essentially, all students are working on what they need to work on and at their own level. Each lesson Spelling List is a third of a paper with the week's vocabulary below it. The teacher can cut into thirds and staple to a students agenda or to their pretest to go in a folder.
