Second Grade Math Thinker BUNDLE is a collection of all the book in this series. There is a book for each quarter of the school year.
In the series the use of spiraling content, a research based best practice, is developed.
Every quarter the same characters will show up and help students understand a certain problem type. The rigor each time increases allowing the student to apply their background knowledge to the problem. Words used in the problem types remain similar so that students can focus on math and not on reading.
There are problems for every day of the school year in this bundle.
A specific problem type is studied for 5 days. On day 1 there is a lot of support and discussion as 'we do' the work together. As the week goes on there is a gradual release of responsibility so the student is doing more and more of the work independently. If students need to recall what process or structure to use to solve the problem they have previous pages to look back at and capture their thinking and apply it to the new problem.
There are 9 different cat characters illustrating how to work problems. Each cat character helps introduce math standards. The Standards of Mathematical Practice will be used over and over again in the series.
The problem can be displayed on the board and worked whole group with everyone contributing to the conversation. This supports the English Language Arts Speaking and Listening Standards as well. As the work is discussed, students may do the work in their own book. Different strategies are shown for each type of problem. By the end of the week a student will have had the opportunity to find the strategy that works best for them.
The books may become a math problem solving portfolio showing student progress. The books can be used as data and shared with parents at conferences. The books can also be used for informal assessment by helping the teacher understand where each student needs enrichment or remediation.
I hope you enjoy using the Math Thinker Series with your students!
