These are great games to use when teaching the second grade standard 2.MD.1, Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
There are three games in this packet for students to use and prep is super easy for you! The three games are:
Spin and List: Use a pencil and a paperclip to spin. List an object that you would measure with a ruler, yardstick, or measuring tape. If you land on your choice, you choose which object to list!
What Would You Use: Choose a card, write the object listed on the card. Then write would you use a ruler, measuring tape or yardstick to measure the object?
I Spy: This is a great game for whole group, partners or small group. This can be done orally, but I like to use whiteboards. Show the students the I Spy sheets. Say the prompt, “I spy with my eye, something that you would measure with a ________.” You chose if you want them to find something you would measure with a ruler, yardstick or measuring tape. Students can tell you their answer or write it on the white board. I like this game because you can also make them tell you why they chose this object.
