Product Description
Are you searching for an NGSS Aligned Second Grade Science Curriculum (with EDITABLE tasks/items*) that promotes hands-on/minds-on inquiry-based learning, while reinforcing ELA standards? Then, this bundle is for you!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*Most, not all, items are EDITABLE. Tasks and other EDITABLE word documents do not contain graphics due to the fact they are editable. See product preview for an example. Tasks are editable so you can curtail them to your students' needs.

**********************************************************************

Special Note: The NGSS standards are heavy on Inquiry-Based skills. The lessons in this full-year curriculum are designed to put the learning in the hands of the students while the teacher is the facilitator; therefore, they are rigorous in nature. The lesson plans provide facilitation tips.

**********************************************************************

General Notes:

• Suggested Curriculum/Unit Pacing is noted. (Your students may need to go faster/slower, depending upon their needs.)

• Detailed Unit Plans based upon:

1. NGSS standards and ELA CCSS standards (See below for specific standards for each lesson.)
2. inquiry-based learning (This encourages minds-on/hands-on learning.)
3. the 5 Es:
Step 1: Engage
Step 2: Explore
Step 3: Explain
Step 4: Elaborate
Step 5: Evaluate
(These steps help with the inquiry process.)
4. cross-curricular aspects (Reading and Writing aspects are intertwined.)
5. 3-Dimensional Learning Required by NGSS (See top of unit plan for specific info for each lesson.)
-Science and Engineering Practices: These are thinking about and doing science.
-Core Ideas: These are what we traditionally think of as content/facts.
-Crosscutting Concepts: Students should be looking for these as they complete the lessons.

• Curriculum formulated using the backwards-design curriculum model:

1) Started at the Standard
2) Made an assessment
3) Made lessons with activities aligned to standards/assessment

General Items included:

• Generic lesson plan flowchart based upon NGSS and the 5 Es-See above. (This document gives general facilitation tips for any NGSS inquiry-based lesson.)
• Editable Science Talk flip book cards (for any science lesson)
• Editable Science Detective graphic organizer (for any science lesson)
• Editable Teacher Vocabulary Word cards (could be put on a word wall)
• Editable Student Vocabulary Science Journal

**********************************************************************

EACH lesson in every unit has:

Additional Notes:

Biggest Shifts with NGSS:

• Science should be multi-dimensional (Previous science education has typically been 1-dimensional. It has mostly focused on the content/facts.)
• Exploration is the key: Science should be more about thinking/doing, not just facts. (Direct instruction can be utilized; however, students should explore and start putting the pieces together themselves first. Then, direct instruction can be used to clear up any student misconceptions.) The 5 Es lesson format helps with exploration.
