Second Grade NGSS Science Curriculum FAQ*:

Special Notes:

-This curriculum can be used as is, or can supplement your existing curriculum.

-The lessons in this full-year curriculum are designed to put the learning in the hands of the students while the teacher is the facilitator; therefore, they are rigorous in nature.

-This package contains tasks and lesson sequences that are for teachers ready to explore NGSS and try inquiry-based learning. (If you are new to NGSS and/or the 5 Es inquiry-based lesson sequence, feel free to message me for more information to see if this product is the right fit for you and your students.)

-You will not find traditional tests and worksheets with this product since the NGSS standards are heavy on inquiry-based learning. (See below for each lesson's objective and what's included for each lesson.)

-The unit plans included in this product have lesson sequences specific to each lesson, while the general 5 Es lesson plan template gives more information about the inquiry-process and general facilitation tips for teachers. (If you decide to purchase, you can always message me throughout your implementation of the standards and curriculum. I've went through the journey with my kiddos and I'm more than happy to share/help in whatever way I can. It can be daunting switching from teacher-centered to student-centered learning at first, but I now fully enjoy the student-centered inquiry-based facilitation model.)

Additional Notes:

-Some, not all, items are EDITABLE. Most lesson tasks are EDITABLE word documents in order to fit your students' needs. (Each editable item is an individual word document or Power Point/Smart Board lesson.) Tasks and other EDITABLE word documents do not contain graphics due to the fact they are editable. See product preview for examples.

-PowerPoint versions are now included for all Smart Board slides to meet the needs of buyers. The majority of the PowerPoint slides are the same as the Smart Board slides. Some of the PowerPoint slides are tweaked due to the differences in the two programs.

Additional Notes:

Biggest Shifts with NGSS:

• Science should be multi-dimensional (Previous science education has typically been 1-dimensional. It has mostly focused on the content/facts.)
• Exploration is the key: Science should be more about thinking/doing, not just facts. (Direct instruction can be utilized; however, students should explore and start putting the pieces together themselves first. Then, direct instruction can be used to clear up any student misconceptions.) The 5 Es lesson format helps with exploration.
