OVERVIEW:

Are you looking for the perfect tool to build place value fluency and understanding? Have you discovered that your students aren’t retaining the skills introduced during your place value unit? Searching for a low-prep, engaging routine that boosts place value skills?

This Number of the Day Binder will help your students strengthen their place value understanding through daily place value modeling and reasoning routines. The pages of this binder are designed to be printed once, inserted into page protectors and stored in ½ binders for daily use throughout the school year. You can use this binder as a daily math warm up, daily bellwork or as a center for math rotations.

All activities in this Number of the Day Binder are designed to use with numbers between 0-100. Simply pick a new number each day and send your students on their way to build place value skills in their reusable binder.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

The following activities are included. For a detailed look at every page of the binder, click the preview button above.

Place Value Models: On page 1, show today’s number using place value blocks and tally marks.

Tens Frames and Number Lines: On page 2, show today’s number using tens frames and mark it on a number line.

Odd and Even: On page 3, determine if today’s number is odd or even using place value blocks and identify the value of the digit in the ones place.

Place Value In Different Forms: On page 4, write the number of the day in a place value chart. Record the number in standard form, expanded form and word form. Identify and record the value of the ones and tens place. The “Writing Numbers In Different Forms” reference sheet on page 5 provides information about expanded, standard and word form and includes a word list of number words.

Using A Hundred Chart: On page 6, locate the number of the day on a hundred chart. Determine how many more must be added to today’s number to reach a total of 100. Write a fact family that includes the number of the day. Increase counting fluency by recording ten more, ten less, one more, and one less than the number of the day.

Skip Counting: On page 7, exercise skip counting fluency by skip counting by fives and tens using the number of the day as a starting point.

Money Values: On page 8, count coins by circling coins that, when added together, have a value equal to today’s number. The “How Much Is It Worth?” reference sheet on page 9 provides information about the value of each coin and how many of each coin are needed to make one dollar.

Today’s Time: On page 10, record today’s time in analog and digital format. Record the time one hour prior to today’s time and one hour from today’s time. Record an activity that would reasonably be done in the A.M. and P.M. hours at today’s time. Calculate how many minutes will pass from the today’s time until the next full hour. On page 11, the “Reading A Clock” reference page provides information about how to read a clock and record times in digital format.
