• In this lesson the students will be learning how to use the number line as a tool for subtraction. Students will learn to move to the left of the number and count backwards when subtracting starting with the largest number. The teacher will distribute numbers written on index cards. Students will be instructed to stand side by side making a large number line. The students will play a “Number Line Game.” The teacher will write subtraction problems on the smart board and then ask students to walk along to the number and stop at the answer. By participating in this math game, the students will be actively involved in using a number line to solve subtraction problems. Students will complete subtraction problems in their workbooks to reinforce the concept of using number lines as an aid in subtracting. Students will play a game called “War” in small groups using deck of cards if time permits.
