Center time should be easy yet engaging! Students should not be coming to you during your guided reading to ask you how to do something. I needed some activities for my students to practice their phonics skills during guided reading/center time. Second grade is where they really start to apply all the phonics patterns in their writing but I wanted to them continue to work on these patterns independently. This pack includes activities that your second graders will be able to practice during center time by themselves or with a partner. Sometimes I like to take a look at the recording sheets and use those as a grade. Sometimes I laminate the recording sheets and have them reuse them to cut back on paper. The choice is yours! The activities included in this pack are:
*Long O a-plenty (students work in partners to roll a cube and cover words with the long o pattern oa and ow)
*Row your Boat (students find the missing letters from a long o picture and record the entire word.) Note: pictures include oa and ow.
*Turkey Trouble (students spin a spinner and record a word with a long i pattern. patterns include i, ie, igh, i_e and y) Note: for this center I noticed some of my students struggling to "think up" a word. I let them use their reading notebooks or leveled readers to find matching words.
*Past and Present Pilgrimage (students read and sort words with ed and ing under past or present and record) Note: all words in this center are ie, igh, ee or ea phonics pattern.
*Serving up Long U (students match long u words spelled with ew to pictures and record)
*Turkey for You (students match long u words spelled with ue to pictures and record)
All centers are interactive and hands on and come with recording pages.
