This movie is a historical drama based on true events about the 1839 mutiny aboard the slave ship La Amistad. While on the La Amistad, Mende tribesmen abducted for the slave trade were able to gain control of the ship off the coast of Cuba. After the United States government captured the La Amistad, an important legal battle followed that was finally resolved by the United States Supreme Court in 1841.
