This movie is a historical drama based on true events about the 1839 mutiny aboard the slave ship La Amistad. While on the La Amistad, Mende tribesmen abducted for the slave trade were able to gain control of the ship off the coast of Cuba. After the United States government captured the La Amistad, an important legal battle followed that was finally resolved by the United States Supreme Court in 1841.

WHAT DO YOU GET?

There are TWO sets of questions included in this movie guide. One movie guide includes an additional NINE class discussion questions. Meanwhile, the other movie only includes 24 short and fill-in the blank questions.

1 Extension Activity: In this activity students pretend to be a member of the American Anti-Slavery Society. As a member they will write a letter to John Quincy Adams with the hope to convince him to change his mind in representing the Africans.
