Before “opening” the classroom library for browsing, we teach students all about what lives in our classroom library, how it is organized, why we’ve chosen the books that are included in it, how they will “check out” books and how they’ll help keep it organized for other readers. We then give students an opportunity to browse the classroom library. While students browse, they fill out their bingo board. They are encouraged to fill as many as possible but also to make it an authentic place to keep track of books they might read. There are 10 different bingo boards - so distribute them amongst students in a mixed up way. You may end up getting a few “bingos!” at once or you may not depending on how many boxes and which ones students fill in. Be prepared for either. Once students have all had a chance to fill in their bingo board with reading ideas, they head back to seats for a good old fashioned game of bingo.
Have fun! Happy Teaching!!
