Looking for a way to engage young learners in their spelling lessons? Just don't tell them it's spelling! This resource was created by a Prep (Australian school) teacher who wanted to foster a love for writing in her students. The program can be used alongside any school based spelling program.
The program offers a different perspective on spelling tests, seeing words as 'secret codes' that the teacher wants the students to break. The file contains details about setting up the Secret Code system as well as the necessary classroom signs, test book covers and homework lists.
For young students there is an emphasis on using the 'sound it out' strategy. Older students can take home their 'top secret file' of codewords with their homework so that they can practice their weekly codes at home in preparation for, what would typiclaly be called, the weekly spelling test (AKA Secret Code time).
Engage your students in their spelling activities and build their confidence to attempt using the sound out strategy for spelling unknown words.
