After introducing the "Journey to Freedom" Unit/Underground Railroad, tell your students that secret codes/phrases were used in the process of rescuing enslaved people. On each worksheet, you will find a code that was used on the Underground Railroad. First, have your students write down what they THINK the code word/phrase means. Next, explain what the code REALLY MEANS. Students should record the true meaning. Finally, students should explain why they think secret codes were used in the first place.
