Description

This "secret message" activity will amuse your students and teach them about mean absolute deviation.

Directions: In each row, determine which set of data has the greatest mean absolute deviation. You may need to use another sheet of paper to record the mean, the distances from the mean, and the average distance from the mean. Circle the letter next to the greatest mean absolute deviation in each row. The first one has been completed for you.

This worksheet moves from very basic (data on a number line, with the mean already found) to the more complex (a set of data, students must find mean, distance from mean, and m.a.d.).

At the end, read the message from top to bottom. It reads, "far from mean" (The other letters spell "my head hurts").

And all you have to do is copy it! The prep is all done for you. It's easy to check. Just see if they found the secret message! It's up to you to determine how much work you require your students to show. Use it as group work, homework, enrichment, or extra practice.

This activity was very engaging and students participated, While having to teach students that were learning from home using their technology, this resource became very helpful for their learning process. It helped several students as an intervention for those strugglers that needed that extra help so they wouldn't get behind in their learning level during these challenging times. This resource was very user-friendly for me as well as for the students.
