Students practice first with writing numbers 1 to 120. Then using "The Secret Number is less than, more than, or equal to" students guess the number. The teacher then tells the students the number is more than __ (number guessed) or less than ___. I project my paper so the student who are still struggling with the more than, less than concept can see what numbers to cross out.
Example: (Secret number is 83)
Student: The secret number is less than 20.
Teacher: The secret number is more than 20. (teacher and students cross out everything that is smaller than 20, including 20)
This continues until someone guesses the number or the class is ready to move on.
Then students use the second page to decompose and compose the secret number.
My students love doing this game and we usually spend about 20 to 30 minutes working on it without them getting restless.
