This lab is intended to rather quickly introduce students to the basic parts of seeds, and to 'wow' students with the impressive amount of water that seeds absorb in order to germinate. This lab is not intended to teach or to reinforce the scientific method. Students will not, in this lab, be growing seedlings.
Students are provided the opportunity to use the balance and magnifying tools (such as hand lenses or a stereoscope). [It is assumed that students have already been taught how to use these tools.]
Some basic math is involved (subtraction, division, multiplication), reinforcing the idea that scientists like to quantify their observations. Teachers may opt to allow the use of calculators.
