A little more clarification on the board game:
This game is designed to introduce children to the concept of what Dr. Stephen Covey calls the emotional bank account. This concept is important to teach when introducing Seek First to Understand Then to Be Understood because these concepts are so interconnected. Building a strong emotional bank account helps others to open up to us so that we can understand them. Listening and seeking to understand also helps to build our emotional bank account.
I introduce the emotional bank account to my kids as the emotional piggy bank. I tell them that with every person they know, they have a piggy bank. This piggy bank is filled with the trust they have built with that person. Stronger relationships have higher trust built up. They continually have the choice to add to or take away from that piggy bank with what they say but especially with what they do.
This game helps students see how they can build or take away from the trust in their friendships and relationships with families. Many of the cards show the same situation but have a different result to show that with every interaction, we have a choice to build or take away from the emotional piggy bank.
