This Common Core phonics lesson is focused on segmenting single-syllable words into phonemes. The lesson includes research-based strategies and strategic questions that prepare students for Common Core assessments. Students do not have a handout for this lesson. This lesson should focus on students’ phonological awareness, meaning they should only be listening to the words not reading them. Supplemental materials, including flash cards and a list of additional words for segmenting, are provided for use with this lesson. In addition to the lesson, there are four pages of independent practice and review with questions modeled after the Common Core assessment items.
