This lesson builds vocabulary and phonemic awareness by segmenting words into phonemes (sound units). In 24 pages, the child will
• preview the letter sounds /n/ and /g/,
• preview eight words: Ned, napkin, nap, night, Gale, good, gets, and gives,
• read the words in sentences,
• segment phonemes in words using picture blocks and letters,
• identify and read sight words in phrases and sentences,
• answer literal comprehension questions, and
• trace color-coded letters and words.

The activities are aligned to the following standards:

Common Core: ELA Kindergarten
RF.2.2c: Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllables in spoken words.
RF.2.2d: Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (CVC) words.
RF.3.3c: Read common high-frequency words by sight.
L.1.1d: Understand and use question words.
L.1.1e: Use the most frequently occurring prepositions.

2.E: Recognize spoken alliteration or groups of words that begin with the same spoken onset or initial sound.
2.F: Blend spoken onsets and rimes to form simple words.

2.I: Segment spoken one-syllable words into two to three phonemes.
4.B: Ask and respond to questions about texts read aloud.
16.A(iv): Understand and use prepositions and simple prepositional phrases appropriately when speaking or writing.

This guided-reading pack is the third lesson of Book 14 from the Newitt Beginning Reading and Writing Program. The program provides a fundamental yet integrated approach to reading, writing, listening, and speaking the English language. The standards-based series of 24 books guides novice learners through a full year curriculum. Each lesson discovers, connects, and practices the basics of English.

A key feature of the program is that it uses linear incremental steps and repeated practices linked to higher level thinking skills. This approach gives the learner a solid foundation of reading and writing experiences. In the process, the learner gains routine study habits, motivation to learn, confidence, and mastery.
